Winter | Soft Against the Cold

When the temperature drops, it’s the small comforts that make all the difference - a bed layered in warmth, towels thick enough to take off the chill and a favourite knit to wrap up in.

Small comforts make all the difference when the temperature drops. A bed layered up in texture and warmth, ready to be climbed into at the end of a long day. Towels thick enough to take off the chill after a bath that warms your chilly bones. A favourite knit reached for without thinking, pulled on and wrapped a little tighter as the evenings draw in.

Winter at home is made of these quiet rituals – the softness of good cotton, the weight of wool, the simple pleasure of slipping into a bed that has already been warmed for you. Together they turn the colder months into something to look forward to.

Our latest edit gathers together the pieces that do exactly that: soft, tactile and made to be used every day, from the first frosty morning to the last long night of the season.

Layered for Warmth

The bedroom is where winter comfort begins and ends. Soft cotton, a heavier blanket folded at the foot, pillows piled against the headboard and a pillowcase with a little character.

Our Soft Check Pillowcase brings exactly that, with its taupe gingham check, gentle ruffle and brown rick rack trim. Their soft, neutral tones sit happily alongside plain linens, florals and stripes, making them an easy way to give the bed a seasonal feel without starting over.

And for the coldest nights, there is nothing quite like a hot water bottle tucked between the sheets. Our Velvet Hot Water Bottle is made exclusively for us by Sarah Delaney in Wiltshire, using upcycled velvet in a rich chocolate brown and finished with a pink velvet ribbon – pretty enough to leave out on the bed by day, and the first thing you will reach for by night.

How to Layer a Bed for Winter

A few simple steps make all the difference between a bed that is simply made and one you can’t wait to climb into:

  • Start with a breathable base – cotton sheets keep you warm without overheating, so you sleep soundly through the night
  • Add warmth in stages – rather than one very heavy duvet, layer a lighter one with a blanket or quilt folded at the foot of the bed that you can pull up on the coldest nights
  • Mix your textures – smooth cotton, cosy wool and soft velvet together make a bed look and feel instantly more inviting
  • Be generous with pillows – two to sleep on and a couple more to lean against for reading. Mismatched pillowcases in a shared palette feel relaxed and collected
  • Warm up the palette – swap crisp summer whites for oatmeal, taupe, chocolate and soft, dusky pinks
  • Pre-warm the bed – fill a hot water bottle with hot (never boiling) water and tuck it in where your feet will go half an hour before bed
  • Create a soft landing – a handwoven mattress laid at the foot of the bed, along a bench or on a window seat creates a cosy spot for pulling on socks or curling up with a book. Ours is hand-tufted in the French style, hand-dyed in a warm plaster pink and handmade in West Africa.

The Winter Bath

There is no better antidote to a cold, grey day than a deep, hot bath, and what comes after matters just as much. Stepping out into a towel thick enough to wrap right around you is one of winter’s simplest luxuries.

Our textured towels are hand-loomed in Turkey from soft, Oeko-Tex certified cotton, using a traditional weave given a contemporary update. The Raspberry Stripe Textured Towel has narrow ecru and raspberry stripes and hand-tied tassels, while the Check Textured Towel brings a classic check to the same textured weave. Both are generously sized, and the bath sheet is big enough to wrap up in completely.

Drape your towel over a radiator or heated rail while the bath runs, so it is warm and waiting the moment you step out.

A Favourite Knit

Every winter wardrobe has one piece we reach for without thinking, pulled on as we head out the door, wrapped a little tighter on the walk home and draped over our shoulders long after we are back inside.

Our Striped Scarf is a generous triangular shawl in brown and ecru stripes, made in small batches at a UK factory from ethically sourced Shetland wool. Because the wool is left undyed, in its natural state, it grows softer the more it is worn. At 150 x 70cm, it is just as lovely worn as a wrap around the house on chilly evenings as it is bundled up outdoors.

To keep a wool scarf at its best, hand wash it in cool water with a gentle wool detergent and dry it flat. Looked after well, it will be the one you reach for winter after winter.

Wrapped Up

If we lean into winter, it’s a season that asks us only to slow down, stay warm and make the most of the comforts close to home. A bed that has been warmed for you, a towel fresh off the radiator, a scarf that gets softer every year.
