Easter arrives a slightly later this year, in the midst of April with spring in full bloom.
There’s a quiet luxury to this timing – March has given us time to reacquaint ourselves with longer days, and to let spring tiptoe in at its own pace. Now with Easter on the horizon, we are ready to gather, to lay tables, to welcome in the light and warmth that lingers a little longer each evening.
This year we embrace a softer kind of celebration: an Easter morning tea. You may have the grand affair of the Easter roast planned too, enjoyable but intense with hours spent by the oven and lots of dishes to plan and execute. The Easter ‘elevenses’, on the other hand, is a more simple and relaxed gathering with a table dressed in linens, cups filled and refilled and easy conversation drifting between bites of something sweet.
We take inspiration from the Italians and their spirit of celebration, often rooted in the simple things. Our Easter table is focused round a golden panettone, sliced apart at the table and shared amongst friends and family. Its soft, buttery crumb can be topped with a dusting of icing sugar, or laden with creamy icing and chocolate eggs.
We look to nature for our tablescaping this Easter, and the crisp beauty of green takes centre stage. The Easter table features the verdant shades of fresh herbs, echoing the early leaves of the season. A green gingham tablecloth topped with terracotta pots and young plants, ceramic cups filled with wild greenery, and a plate of soft-boiled eggs – the most nostalgic of Easter brunch courses.
An Easter gathering like this should feel effortless, with simple ceramics and minimal styling. White tableware will continue the light, fresh feel, and play around with different styles side by side – detailed and intricate next to weighty rustic pottery creates lovely layers and textures. Add continental-style water glasses and cups for tea and coffee, and your Easter scene is set.
The beauty of this theme is it’s endlessly versatile. The green textiles, white tableware and decorative details work far beyond Easter; the perfect investment for year-round tablescaping whether it’s summer garden parties or cosy autumn dinners.
