As the seasons turn and Autumn arrives, it can be tempting to retreat indoors for meals and socialising. But spending time outdoors is so restorative at this time of year; catching Autumn sunlight gives you energy and helps fight seasonal fatigue, and it’s an opportunity to take in the beautiful colours of nature at this time of year. While we’re all about cosy hygge at Sorbet Living, this year we are delaying the great hibernation a little longer and enjoying Autumn picnics in the garden.
SOFTEN THE SEATING
Whether you have a bijoux bistro table and chairs or a full outdoor dining set up, a few thoughtful tweaks can turn it into a snug picnic area. Add plump cushions to the seats covered in our Old Rose Linen Pillowcases and drape soft blankets over chairs to keep laps warm while eating. Our new lambswool blankets are so toasty to wrap around shoulders when the temperature cools.
SET THE SCENE
Minimise your trips indoors by stocking a basket with everything you need and laying the table before your guests arrive. Our large Handmade Willow Basket is roomy enough for all your autumn picnic essentials, and don’t forget to pack napkins so guests can dust off the crumbs from your meal.
BRING THE HEAT
Fire pits stacked with burning logs are an ideal way to keep your guests warm, and they bring that lovely smoky scent associated with Autumn. You can also pop a hot water bottle on everyone’s place; a caring touch to keep them cosy. If you’re entertaining at night, scatter tealights in jam jars around the table – the jars will protect the lights from the wind and give a magical glow to the evening.
EVERY MEAL CAN BE ENJOYED OUTSIDE
With daylight hours getting shorter in Autumn, make the most of the mornings with a breakfast picnic. Serve fresh coffee, hot chocolate poured straight from the pan and crumpets toasted on the firepit – a beautiful way to start the day. Or invite people for a simple lunch served from your barbecue, afternoon tea on a bright day or early evening drinks and nibbles surrounded by fairy lights with a crackling outdoor fire.
Autumn can actually be a fleeting season, following on from the busy summer and leading into the festive period. Gather your loved ones together, wrap up warm and take the time to enjoy it while the weather is kind.
