The Christmas table: cocoa, cranberry & the magic of gathering

Banners_AbbieMelle_5

Christmas Day has its own rhythm – usually a slow morning, the familiar rituals and the quiet build toward everyone finally taking their seats around the table. The outside world is hushed and ready for this moment that anchors the whole festive season.

At Sorbet Living we take great pride and care in our styling of the table, on Christmas Day. It’s an annual preparation that invites creativity and a little bit of magic, setting the scene for a beautiful and memorable gathering.

This year, that magic comes to life in our seasonal palette of Cocoa & Cranberry – a warm and grounding tone which is richly festive. It’s Christmas styling with a softer touch: thoughtful details, natural texture, and crafted pieces to make the day feel both relaxed and beautifully elevated.

A foundation of soft, layered linens

The Christmas table begins long before the food arrives. Soft tonal linens set a warm, welcoming foundation, calm enough to let your styling shine, or choose a more detailed tablecloth with lace trim for a nostalgic touch. Layering is key on Christmas Day: a generous tablecloth, perhaps a runner for depth, and soft linen napkins tied with ribbon or a sprig of fresh foliage.

Cocoa & cranberry accents for a festive lift

Rather than leaning into the traditional red-and-green, we’re steering toward something more refined. Touches of cocoa and cranberry bring richness and warmth to the styling, adding depth without fuss and inviting guests to notice the considered details of your festive table. The pattern of a hand-glazed butter dish, a deep-red glass candle, or a chocolate-toned throw draped over a chair for guests to cosy up with between courses.

Settings with crafted ceramics

Christmas Day deserves pieces that feel special – ceramics with texture and soul. Let each plate, bowl, and platter play its part in the story. Mix finishes for a collected look, lean into natural textures, and let the beauty of handmade craftsmanship elevate the food you’ve prepared.

Foraged, effortless centrepieces

A Christmas centrepiece doesn’t have to be grand. A cluster of candles at different heights, seasonal branches or eucalyptus running down the middle, or a bowl of cherries and plums that nod to the season’s abundance.

Keep arrangements low so the conversation isn’t interrupted by a towering floral moment. When in doubt let candlelight do most of the work – it softens everything and makes even a relaxed setting feel special.

The finishing flourishes

Once the table is set, it’s the whispered details around the room that complete the Christmas Day atmosphere. Stockings hanging from the mantlepiece, candles glowing on coffee tables and sideboards, casting soft light into the corners and festive heirlooms placed on windowsills. These finishing touches tie the whole home together, creating a warm, cohesive mood that welcomes guests from the moment they walk in.
