With the new season comes fresh inspiration for tablescaping. We love creating a different mood for each seasons’ table, whether you’re serving a relaxed brunch for overnight guests or afternoon drinks leading into dinner on a warm summer’s evening. This year, the fresh green stripes of our table linen and classic white crockery reminded us of a quaint greenhouse and the vibrant bounty of fruits, vegetables and herbs grown in these pretty hothouses. This theme celebrates the joy of simple food, made from locally grown seasonal produce, and weaving ingredients and plants into your table design.
With our striped table linen cloth as a base, we have layered in natural textures on top to give an organic feel to the design. Our new natural placements are perfect for this; handwoven and rustic, they fit with every dining theme and double up as trivets to rest centrepiece dishes. Potted herbs make a lovely alternative to flowers, or you can mix the two with fragrant basil, mint and thyme plants interspersed with shapely vases filled with ferns, white hydrangeas and green-tinged chrysanthemums.
The perfect scenario would see the table greenery against a backdrop of your garden, but we all know how unpredictable the British summer can be! If you are forced to bring the outside in, the silver lining of a roof over your head is you can add candles to the table. This season we have introduced new bamboo lanterns, with a beautiful round design and looped handle. The lanterns have an internal glass fitting to place a pillar candle and you can use on the table or clustered around the seating area, inside or out. For a more subtle glow, our set of four candles continue the green theme in soft botanical shades and fit snugly in our stoneware candleholder.
Keep simplicity in mind for your other table elements. Our olive green glasses blend beautifully in the lush tablescape, paired with our striped table linen and patterned white crockery. Oil vessels have become a popular table accessory in recent seasons and we have a handmade, rustic oil dispenser perfect for all oils and vinegars. You can add a splash of colour with table napkins (we always advocate for fabric napkins rather than paper), choose from two floral designs this season, handmade in India with traditional block-printing techniques.
The Summer table is a place to mark every occasion this season – family birthdays, anniversaries, toasting exam results, or simply a chance to gather with family and friends and enjoy a wholesome seasonal feast. Reflect your table theme by keeping the food fresh and simple – salads made with juicy tomatoes and leafy greens, artisan breads with an antipasti board, vegetable crudities with a selection of dips and fruit platters all work well. Celebrate family birthdays with a classic cake topped with fresh flowers and a side dish of whipped cream.
